Spotify has introduced a new verification method for its Premium Family and Duo plans to ensure all members reside at the same physical address as the account manager. The process requires plan members to scan a dynamic QR code displayed on the manager’s mobile device while in the same location. To prevent circumvention via screenshots, the QR code refreshes every few seconds. Users notified of a verification requirement have seven days to comply. Failure to complete the scan results in the account being downgraded to the ad-supported Free tier and a 12-month ban from joining any other Family or Duo subscription plans. While users remain eligible for individual Premium subscriptions, they are barred from shared plans for one year. Co-CEO Alex Norström described the implementation during a quarterly earnings call as a “routine improvement to verification tools” rather than a crackdown. The measure is intended to enforce existing terms of service and prevent users at different addresses from sharing a single subscription, potentially converting them into individual paying subscribers. However, the policy has raised concerns regarding its impact on students living away from home, traveling family members, or those in non-traditional living arrangements.
