Spotify has introduced a more stringent verification process for its Premium Family and Duo subscription plans to ensure all members reside at the same address as the primary account holder. The new system utilizes dynamic QR codes that refresh every few seconds, requiring members to be physically present with the account manager to scan the code using the Spotify mobile app. This method is designed to prevent the use of static screenshots for verification. Co-CEO Alex Norström described the move as a “routine improvement” to strengthen existing household requirements and close loopholes in the verification process. Reports indicate the system may also utilize Bluetooth technology to verify device proximity between members. Users who receive a verification request have seven days to complete the process. Failure to comply results in the user being downgraded to a free account and being barred from joining any other Family or Duo plans for a period of 12 months. While these users are prohibited from joining shared plans, they remain eligible to subscribe to individual Premium accounts. The policy aims to curb account sharing among non-residents, though it may impact legitimate users, such as students or traveling family members, who are temporarily away from the primary household.
