Season 3 of *House of the Dragon* follows the civil war triggered by Queen Rhaenyra’s seizure of the Iron Throne. Early episodes detail a depleted treasury and a Hightower plot involving a false Prince Daeron, while Lord Ormund Hightower’s occupation of Tumbleton and his declaration of kingship escalate the conflict. In Episode 7, Rhaenyra offers Alicent Hightower freedom for herself and Helaena if Alicent assassinates Aemond Targaryen. This penultimate chapter also features Daemon’s search for Rhaena and dragon confrontations involving Sunfyre and Caraxes, setting the stage for the Battle of the Gullet. The episode shifts focus toward political maneuvering, revealing that Ormund Hightower is negotiating with Ulf the White to flip dragonriders. It also features the dramatic return of Sunfyre, Aegon II’s dragon, which rescues its rider. The season concludes with the devastating Battle of Tumbleton, characterized by the episode ‘The Treasons at Tumbleton’. The conflict is marked by the betrayal of Ulf the White, who switches sides after facing disrespect from both factions, and the deaths of Ormund Hightower and Helaena Targaryen. The battle also highlights a shift in Daemon Targaryen’s perspective on the glory of combat following a violent duel. The finale highlights Rhaenyra’s shift toward authoritarianism; she orders the murder of the High Septon after he refuses to recognize her legitimacy and declares herself the ‘Prince That Was Promised’ to solidify her claim. The survival of Aegon II further destabilizes her position. Following the conclusion of the season, HBO reported high viewership, with the finale reaching 21 million viewers within its first three days and a per-episode average of 34 million. Showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed the series will conclude with a fourth and final season, projected with filming expected to arrive begin in early 2027 and a potential release around 2028.
