In late July 2026, Bosnian police and the District Public Prosecutor’s Office summoned at least 26 current and former employees of the Srebrenica Memorial Center for questioning. The summons occurred the day after the centre presented its annual Report on the Denial of Genocide. The centre described the action as the largest intimidation effort against staff documenting the genocide, alleging that authorities were using a tax‑evasion investigation as a pretext. Political leaders from both the Republika Srpska and the Bosnian Presidency condemned the summons, and the issue was raised at the United Nations. On 3 August, the prosecutor’s office opened a pre‑investigation case focused on the centre’s 2022 operations under article 264 of the Republika Srpska Criminal Code. All summoned individuals were designated as witnesses, and no formal investigation order had been issued. The centre’s board publicly backed the staff, announced an independent review led by director Emir Suljagić, and denied possessing a disputed staff list reportedly held by police. By 10 August, as more than 20 employees and associates faced hearings at the Srebrenica Police Station, Suljagić drew parallels between the current legal actions and the use of formal procedures to mask systematic killings during the 1995 genocide. He criticized officials such as Željka Cvijanović and Srđan Amidžić, suggesting that the insistence on the legality of current judicial activities mirrors past patterns of using legal mechanisms to provide a veneer of legitimacy for atrocities. Suljagić asserted that the staff would not yield to pressure. The centre’s union has since called for increased protection from the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In response to the proceedings, lawyers representing the centre, Kešan & Ibeljić, submitted a formal request to the Bijeljina District Public Prosecutor's Office seeking clarification on the investigation.
