Sri Lanka international trade and investment expansion

Overview

Sri Lanka is actively pursuing initiatives to strengthen international trade and investment ties, with a particular focus on China and Hong Kong.

Efforts to bolster relations with China include the 25th anniversary of the Sri Lanka–China Business Council. During this milestone, Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe noted that China is projected to remain the nation’s largest trading partner, with significant flows involving steel, vehicles, apparel, tea, and coconut products.

To further expand market access, a seminar in Colombo titled ‘Bridging Markets: Unlocking Hong Kong–Sri Lanka Trade & Investment Opportunities’ was organized by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office and other regional bodies. This event aimed to connect Sri Lankan exporters in sectors such as ICT, gemstones, and food to Hong Kong and Mainland China, leveraging Hong Kong’s position as a global business hub.
