On August 15, a Sri Lanka Navy Dvora fast attack craft encountered distress off the Angulana coast while returning from a routine patrol. Eleven naval personnel were rescued and hospitalized in stable condition through a joint effort involving the Navy, Air Force, local police, and the fishing community. One crew member remained missing following the incident. After 20 days of search operations, which were hindered by rough seas and low visibility, naval divers recovered the remains of Lieutenant Udayapriya, the vessel’s second-in-command. The craft, identified as Fast Attack Craft P 4447, eventually sank to a depth of 75 to 80 feet after a vacuum system malfunctioned during a towing attempt. An expert panel has been appointed to investigate the accident, with preliminary reports suggesting the vessel may have struck a submerged wreck. Following the search and rescue phase, specialist diving and salvage teams successfully completed a complex maritime salvage operation to raise the vessel from approximately 80 feet underwater. Despite challenges posed by rough seas and poor visibility, the operation was conducted with technical assistance from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Colombo Dockyard PLC. The recovered craft has been towed to the Colombo Dockyard premises for further assessment.
