Authorities in Sri Lanka have launched investigations into organized criminal networks following a violent incident involving Chinese nationals. The altercation, which resulted in the abduction and murder of a Chinese citizen named Hao Song, Song led investigators to suspect the involvement of a transnational cyber-fraud network operating within the country. In response to these and other criminal activities, Sri Lankan response, law enforcement has intensified operations to dismantle cybercrime, financial fraud, and drug trafficking networks. Police reported the arrest of 1,093 foreign nationals across 27 operations during the year. Efforts have also expanded to include the pursuit Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya announced efforts to locate and repatriate 73 individuals subject to Interpol Red Notices. Notices, while investigations continue into nearly 100 others suspected of links to narcotics and criminal networks. To address the increasing sophistication of digital offenses—including identity theft, phishing, and social media impersonation—the police are recruiting software engineers and lawyers to strengthen investigative capabilities. Authorities are also considering a centralized, real-time technological system for investigations and are seeking specialized training for officers. Parliamentary scrutiny has highlighted the need for updated legislative frameworks and improved inter-agency cooperation, particularly as criminal groups utilize cryptocurrency to move funds across jurisdictions. Law enforcement is currently blocking websites linked to illegal gambling and is coordinating with embassies to arrange the deportation of foreign nationals involved in cybercrime. To prevent criminal groups from utilizing using local infrastructure as operational bases, police have urged continue to urge property owners and hotel operators to strictly verify the identities of foreign tenants.
