Sri Lanka pharmaceutical and consumer safety enforcement

Overview

Sri Lanka's Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has implemented an enforcement program targeting the sale of illegal and expired pharmaceutical products. Through August 2026, the CAA conducted 471 special pharmacy raids nationwide, including a two-day operation on August 3 and 4 that inspected 109 pharmacies. These inspections resulted in 86 violations, leading to court-ordered fines totaling Rs 2,269,500.

Seized items included expired medicines, syringes, injections, and medical devices. Separate investigations also uncovered a Colombo warehouse containing illegal medical supplies valued at over Rs 10 million, as well as medical institutions in the north that were fined for possessing expired medicines and overcharging patients.

In addition to pharmaceutical enforcement, the CAA shut down an unlicensed canned fish manufacturing facility in Pannala after seizing stock valued at approximately Rs 1.5 million.
