Sri Lanka is advancing its renewable energy transition through large-scale solar development and the integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to improve grid stability and reduce diesel reliance. While the government plans to connect commercial-scale BESS to the national grid in early September, solar expansion in the Hambantota district has faced scrutiny from conservationists concerned about the loss of native scrubland and habitats for the Indian peafowl. To support long-term sustainability and address a projected power shortfall in early 2027, regarding habitat loss, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has introduced a revised feed-in tariff (FIT) framework. Effective from late August 2026 through February 2027, this structure provides moved forward with strategic policy measures. The PUCSL has approved new renewable energy tariffs that include specific rates incentives for various energy sources, including mini-hydro, wind, battery storage. This policy aims to stabilize electricity prices and reduce reliance on thermal generation by allowing surplus solar PV. These measures support the national target of adding 450 MW of solar and enhanced nighttime rates for larger systems paired with battery storage capacity to ensure an uninterrupted power supply.
