The Department of Meteorology issued a series of advisories across Sri Lanka from early July through mid-August 2026. Early July warnings focused on intermittent rain and thunderstorms in the north and Sabaragamuwa, with sea conditions expected to be choppy. By mid-July, the outlook shifted to mainly dry weather with isolated showers and winds up to 60 km/h on western slopes. In late July, the weather intensified. On 30 July, officials forecast heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, as well as Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara. Strong winds of 40-50 km/h were expected across several provinces, with rough seas and wave heights of 2.0-2.5 m reported from Hambantota to Kalpitiya. Early August brought severe advisories for the central highlands, with downpours exceeding 100 mm in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. On 4 August, an intensifying southwest monsoon brought gusts up to 70 km/h and rough seas from Chilaw to Hambantota, prompting warnings for residents in low-lying areas and instructions for fishermen to stay ashore. By 10 August, reports indicated widespread showers and thundershowers, particularly in Sabaragamuwa and the districts of Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara. Afternoon thundershowers were anticipated in Uva and eastern provinces, including Mullaitivu. Maritime conditions remained rough, especially from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota, where wind speeds could reach 50-60 km/h, leading naval and fishing communities to be urged to remain vigilant. On 13 August, warnings continued for showers or thundershowers in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. Afternoon showers were expected in Uva and the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, and Mullaitivu. Strong winds of 30-40 km/h were anticipated in the North-central, North-western, Central, Southern, and Trincomalee regions.
