The Sri Lankan rupee has demonstrated strength against the US dollar, though it has faced recent volatility. In early August, commercial bank selling rates dropped to approximately Rs 339, and by mid-August, rates fell further to approximately Rs 338. By early September, the rupee showed signs of fluctuation, with major institutions maintaining selling rates around Rs 332, even as Treasury bill yields saw a modest decline. By mid-September, the rupee experienced depreciation. In the spot market, the rupee concluded trading at 328.70/329.00 against the US dollar, down from the previous day’s 328.25/30.00. While Seylan Bank and NDB Bank maintained steady selling rates at Rs 334.00 and Rs 332.75 respectively, other institutions like People’s Bank, Commercial Bank of Ceylon, and Sampath Bank reported slight increases in rates. Bond yields for maturities in 2027, 2032, 2033, and 2034 increased, while the 2029 bond yield remained unchanged. On September 21, the rupee weakened slightly, with the spot market quoting the currency at 331.00/25 compared to the previous Friday’s 330.75/331.25. Commercial bank movements were mixed; NDB Bank reported a buying rate of Rs 326.50 and a selling rate of Rs 335.50, while Commercial Bank and Sampath Bank reported increases in both rates. During this time, domestic bond yields for securities maturing in 2030, 2031, and 2032 moved lower. Market participants attributed the decline in yields partly to falling global oil prices, which may reduce petroleum import costs. By late September, the rupee was trading near 330 to the US dollar. By mid-October, the rupee maintained a steady position, with spot trading closing between 331.00 and 331.10. Commercial bank selling rates for the US dollar ranged between Rs 334 and Rs 336. While Seylan Bank reported slight increases in rates, NDB Bank, People’s Bank, Commercial Bank, and Sampath Bank reported unchanged rates.
