The 2026 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period has officially commenced, with St Kilda maintaining a high asking price for ruckman Rowan Marshall. Following a failed attempt to secure a move last year, Marshall requested a trade for the second consecutive off-season. The situation reportedly escalated after Marshall did not attend the club’s Trevor Barker Award. On Thursday morning, a deal was finalized to trade Marshall to the Geelong Cats. To satisfy St Kilda’s requirement for significant compensation, Geelong provided pick No. 14 along with a 2028 third-round pick. This follows the club’s initial efforts to secure an additional player to be attached to the deal, a condition Geelong reportedly resisted before reaching an agreement. Marshall, who played 177 games for the Saints since joining as a rookie, has since expressed discomfort regarding his decision to skip St Kilda’s best and fairest event. He noted that he had not yet spoken to former coach Ross Lyon following the trade. St Kilda co-captain Cal Wilkie noted that while the playing group will miss Marshall as a teammate and competitor, there are “no ill-feelings within the locker room.” Marshall leaves St Kilda having played 177 games since joining as a rookie.
