Two suspects identified arrested in connection with stabbing of NYPD detective
On Friday afternoon, 33-year-old off-duty NYPD detective José Mercedes was stabbed multiple times during an attempted robbery in the Norwood section of the Bronx. The attack occurred near East 208th Street and Steuben Avenue while Mercedes was retrieving items from his vehicle. Two suspects attempted to steal a gold chain from his neck, resulting in Mercedes sustaining up to seven stab wounds to his neck, torso, and leg. Following the struggle, Mercedes pursued the suspects for approximately two blocks before collapsing. The attackers fled the scene on an electric motorcycle. Mercedes was transported to Jacobi Medical Center, where he is was reported to be in stable condition. Mercedes has been a member of the NYPD since 2016 and was promoted to detective in 2022. Authorities have since identified the two suspects as Dominican nationals Sneider Mejia Bautista, 24, and Dangelo Rafael Jean Caraballo, 25. Both men are currently were initially at large and have with extensive criminal records in New York. According to Department of Homeland Security sources, records. Mejia Bautista has had been under deportation orders since May 2022, but was released due to New York City sanctuary policies despite an ICE detainer. while Jean Caraballo has been arrested had five times prior arrests in New York for offenses including drug possession and carrying York. On Wednesday, the suspects were apprehended in Lynn, Massachusetts, during a loaded firearm, though federal agents targeted operation involving the U.S. Marshals Service, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Lynn Police Department.
