Lucasfilm and Disney are expanding the Star Wars franchise through a strategic return to theatrical cinema and new media formats. Upcoming film projects include ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’, directed by Jon Favreau, as well as films by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and James Mangold. The franchise is also expanding into graphic novels, such as the ‘Star Wars: Boba Fett — Black, White & Red Treasury Edition’ scheduled for October 2026. In addition to film and print, the franchise has expanded into animation with the premiere of ‘LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian’ on Disney+. This Written and directed by Jon Favreau, the animated special provides a humorous retelling of the events from the first three seasons of the live-action series and ‘The Book of Boba Fett’. The production utilizes the LEGO format to lampoon major story moments through self-aware humor and visual jokes. While the special features several returning voice actors and cameos from characters such as Ahsoka and Bo-Katan, Gavin Hammon provides the voice for Din Djarin instead of Pedro Pascal. Some critiques suggest the format functions more as a recap of existing events rather than a completely new narrative.
