The Star Wars franchise announced a new racing title, ‘Star Wars: Galactic Racer’, developed by veterans of the ‘Burnout’ and ‘Need for Speed’ series. Set between Episodes VI and VII in the Outer Rim following the fall of the Empire, the game follows a pilot named Shade competing in the Galactic League to defeat Kestar Bool. The title marks the franchise’s first major racing foray in over two decades. As a roguelite racing game, the campaign is structured in three acts featuring branching race sequences, elimination duels, and special encounters. Players can choose from various vehicles, including land speeders, speeder bikes, swoop speeders, and podracers. Gameplay emphasizes strategic customization and balancing thrust, heat, and energy. A key ‘Ramjet’ turbo mechanic offers speed boosts but carries the risk of engine overheating and explosion. Following the announcement, the Crocin character Biddy Blas became a viral sensation on social media due to humorous voice acting. Lucasfilm Games Producer Craig Derrick acknowledged the trend on X, noting that social media algorithms have heavily prioritized content featuring the character. In response to the game’s release, Lucasfilm Games Vice President Douglas Reilly signaled a broader strategic shift, stating the company intends to produce a “wider variety of Star Wars video games designed to surprise fans” by embracing original ideas from diverse development teams. This strategy involves fostering more flexible partnerships by working with a wider range of developers, including smaller or less established studios, rather than limiting collaborations to the industry’s top five publishers. Reilly noted that “it is not necessarily required to be one of the top five publishers to make a great Star Wars game.” This shift toward diversification is supported by the success of titles like the turn-based strategy game ‘Star Wars: Zero Company’ and ‘Star Wars: Galactic Racer’.
