Lucasfilm has announced details regarding the upcoming film ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’, which is scheduled for theatrical release on May 28, 2027. The story is an original standalone narrative set approximately five years after ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’, following the fall of the First Order and exploring a galaxy without a central governing authority. Director Shawn Levy, who described himself as a “fan making that movie,” confirmed that Ryan Gosling will star as Kade Auberon, a cynical pilot on a high-stakes mission to protect a young boy. Levy also praised Gosling as a “great muse” during recent discussions. The cast has expanded to include Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, and Eva Mendes. As of early 2026, production costs for the film have reached $226.5 million, according to tax filings reported by Forbes. The project was filmed primarily at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom, with additional location shooting in Sardinia. A $51.5 million U.K. tax credit reduces the current net cost to approximately $175 million, though this figure excludes upcoming expenditures for visual effects, post-production, and distribution. Current costs exceed those of ‘The Force Awakens’ and are comparable to ‘The Last Jedi’. To accompany the film, Lucasfilm Publishing announced that author Delilah S. Dawson will write an “expanded retelling” novelization. The book is scheduled for release on June 22, 2027, and is expected to include scenes and context not seen on screen.
