Stara Zagora is hosting a series of cultural, sporting, and community events leading up to its city day on October 5. Initial activities included the 11th annual BEERfest in Zagorka Park, which featured musical performances ranging from Broadway-style productions to hip-hop. In conjunction with upcoming city celebrations, various sports initiatives for children have been organized, including a sports adventure at the Stara Zagora Zoo and summer programs at Zhelezniki School to promote physical activity. The full city day program begins with the 13th ‘Academician Nikolay Liliev’ National Poetry Contest awards on October 1. On October 2, the selection of the 30th mayor of Mlada Zagora will occur, followed by sporting activities occur. On October 3, festivities expanded to include a children's football tournament featuring 30 teams and an aviation event at the Stara Zagora Airport titled ‘The City of Lindens Looks to the Sky.’ The 21st Automobile Retro Assembly Assembly, also held on October 3. 3, featured over 400 classic vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles from Bulgaria, Serbia, Czech Republic, Germany, United Kingdom, Greece, and Romania, incorporating a charitable component. Official city day ceremonies on October 5 include a prayer service at St. Nicholas Cathedral, a ceremony at the Defenders of Stara Zagora monument, a municipal council session, the raising of the national flag, and the presentation of the symbolic key to the city. Cultural highlights for the holiday include free access to regional museums, a folklore concert by the Trakiya ensemble, and an ‘Art in the Park’ event at the zoo. Musical highlights include ‘Colorful Strokes from Bulgaria’, ‘Bridge Between Times’, and performances by the Three Bulgarian Tenors and Vladimir Ampov (Grafa). The holiday celebrations are expected to culminate in a concert by Vladimir Ampov (Grafa) and Dani Ilieva at the municipal square. Extending the festivities, the ‘Living Pictures’ theatrical performance is scheduled for October 6 at the Geo Milev Museum House. Further cultural programming includes the ‘Musical Ikebana’ symphonic concert on October 12 at the Stara Zagora State Opera. This event features Japanese musicians Kiyoko Sakai, Koji Okazaki, and Etsuko Okazaki performing Western European classical works alongside the local opera orchestra under the direction of Nikola Petrov. Preceding the main city day celebrations, late September 2026 features specialized cultural programming.
