Starlink, the satellite internet service provided by SpaceX, is increasingly utilized to facilitate remote work in areas lacking traditional broadband. By utilizing low Earth orbit satellites to reduce latency, the service enables real-time activities such as video calls and large file downloads. For professionals in rural or coastal areas, the technology can transform mobile environments into functional offices, provided antennas maintain a clear view of the sky. As of August 2026, the Starlink constellation has grown to approximately 10,900 active units, contributing to a total orbital satellite population of between 15,000 and 18,500. While providing essential global connectivity, this increasing orbital density has raised concerns regarding light pollution interfering with astronomical observations, as well as potential disruptions to animal migratory patterns and human circadian rhythms. Expansion continues geographically, with SpaceX registering a legal entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina to bring high-speed internet access to residents in remote or inaccessible areas. In the United States, SpaceX continues rapid deployment, such as a recent Falcon 9 launch adding 29 units to orbit. However, this growth has led to regulatory and competitive friction. The provider Iridium has filed a formal complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), alleging that SpaceX’s proposed next-generation gateway stations pose a “significant risk of radio frequency interference” to existing ground installations. Consequently, regulators are re-examining spectrum management, orbital resource allocation, and the potential for space debris. Recent data indicates a massive surge in global satellite connectivity capacity, driven largely by demand for military applications including communication and the control of unmanned aerial vehicles. Global capacity is projected to reach between 120–130 Tb/s this year. The United States, primarily through Starlink, currently holds a dominant position, providing 93 percent of the world's satellite throughput.
