Britt McHenry, a press adviser for the U.S. State Department and former ESPN reporter, resigned following a viral altercation at a Washington Wizards vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA game at Capital One Arena on October 21. Footage released by TMZ shows McHenry throwing a drink at spectators during the confrontation. The incident reportedly began after a group of men directed misogynistic and disparaging remarks toward model Winnie Harlow, the fiancée of Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma. McHenry reportedly intervened to defend the player, leading to verbal hostility and objects being thrown at her by the crowd. McHenry had recently been promoted to lead External Affairs and Press for Under Secretary Jacob Helberg’s team, or appointed to a role on Deputy Secretary of State Jake Sullivan’s team, shortly before the incident. She stepped down within 24 hours of her promotion. While some reports suggest she was dismissed due to her conduct, others indicate she resigned. The State Department has declined to comment, characterizing the resignation as an “internal personnel issue” or a “private personnel matter.”
