Steam hardware survey trends

Overview

The September 2026 Steam hardware survey indicates significant shifts in PC gaming configurations. For the first time, 32GB RAM has become the most common memory configuration, accounting for 42.22% of systems and overtaking 16GB RAM, which fell to 37.82%. This shift follows a reversal from August and is suggested by analysts to be driven by modern gaming demands, such as titles utilizing Unreal Engine 5, as well as the memory requirements of Windows 11 and background applications, despite global memory chip shortages impacting DRAM prices.

In the graphics market, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 has emerged as the most popular individual card with a 5.86% market share, an increase from 3.56% in August. NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series models collectively represent 18.21% of the total GPU share on the platform.

Display and storage trends also show evolution. While 1920x1080 remains the most frequent resolution at 47.91%, it has dropped below the 50% threshold for the first time. Meanwhile, 2560x1440 (QHD/WQHD) usage increased to 27.04%. Additionally, over 53% of users now utilize more than 1TB of disk space.

Recent data also highlights movement in the processor market, where AMD’s market share among respondents increased by over 48%, narrowing the gap with long-time leader Intel. Windows 11 continues to dominate the operating system market at 71.34%.
