Stegra, a green steel manufacturer, is advancing its large-scale production plant project in Boden, Sweden. In mid-September, the company secured a major maritime transport agreement with ESL Shipping to manage the logistics of raw materials and finished steel products. This partnership includes investments in methanol dual-fuel vessels to support decarbonization goals. By late September, Stegra announced a leadership transition, with HÃ¥kan Buskhe, the former CEO of Saab, set to replace founding CEO Henrik Henriksson on November 1. Henriksson will transition into an advisory role. Following a 100-day review by the new board and external consultants, the company confirmed that the financing required to complete the steelworks is greater than previously anticipated. Chairman Leif Johansson attributed the increased costs to inflation and the expenses associated with restarting construction activities that had previously been scaled back. While the company has not officially confirmed specific figures, media reports suggest the funding gap could be at least 10 billion SEK (approximately 1 billion EUR). Despite the financial shortfall, the board expressed confidence in the business model and stated that negotiations with shareholders, financiers, and partners are ongoing. The company maintains that the production timeline remains unchanged and that a robust plan for completion is in place, which includes exploring opportunities for outsourcing and partnerships.
