Researchers at Drum Tower Hospital in Nanjing, China, have conducted a clinical trial using a new stem cell therapy to treat heart failure. The study utilized cardiomyocytes derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), where cells are taken from the patient, reverted to an undifferentiated state, and then differentiated into specialized cardiomyocytes for injection into damaged heart tissue. In a trial monitoring 20 patients, 10 received the iPSC-derived cardiomyocyte treatment while 10 served as a control group receiving coronary artery bypass surgery. Results published in Nature Medicine indicate that after 12 months, 9 out of the 10 patients in the cell therapy group showed significant improvement in heart function. Key metrics showing improvement included global myocardial perfusion and the distance walked in six minutes. Patients in the treatment group reported better responses to daily activities, reduced chest pressure, and decreased shortness of breath. Crucially, the study addressed major safety concerns regarding regenerative cell therapies, noting that no patients developed tumors during the 12-month follow-up period.
