The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) presented ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith with its ‘Thumbs Down’ award during its annual convention in Atlanta. The NABJ stated that Smith has established a “recurring public pattern of disparaging commentary directed at prominent Black women across politics, sports, and media,” arguing his conduct undermines respectful representation. Smith has strongly rejected the honor, calling it “utterly ridiculous,” a “flat out lie,” and a “hit job.” During an appearance on Fox ~~News,~~ News’ ‘Hannity,’ Smith suggested the award was politically motivated and maintained that his remarks represent a “difference of opinion” rather than disparagement. While the NABJ has issued a statement standing by its decision, Smith announced that his production company is nearing a deal to broadcast HBCU basketball games as part of an effort to create opportunities for Black talent. Following his Fox News appearance, Smith faced further criticism from comedian D. L. Hughley. Hughley questioned Smith’s accountability, suggesting that appearing on a network with a history of broadcasting narratives harmful to Black communities was noteworthy given the context of the NABJ recognition.
