Storm Adam, a severe DANA weather event, has caused catastrophic flooding and heavy rainfall across Spain’s Mediterranean coast, particularly impacting the Valencia and Alicante regions, as well as the Balearic Islands. The storm has resulted in multiple fatalities, with deaths reported in the Valencian Community, Catalonia, Andalusia, and Barcelona. In the Safor and Marina Alta regions, the impact was especially severe; in the coastal town of Oliva, rainfall exceeded 530 liters per square meter within 24 hours, while Pego recorded over 620 liters. Some areas reported totals exceeding 700 liters per square meter within a 24-hour period. Specific fatalities in the Safor region included a 79-year-old woman in Oliva, a 64-year-old man at a campsite, and a farmer discovered in the Pego-Oliva marshlands. The flooding caused massive disruptions, including the evacuation of over 2,100 people and the rescue of hundreds by emergency services and the Military Emergency Unit (UME). Authorities implemented confinement orders for approximately 800,000 to 900,000 residents in 145 localities. Emergency services utilized helicopters to reach residents stranded on rooftops during rescue operations. As recovery efforts continue, the Valencian government has approved an initial aid package of 23.5 million euros. This funding is intended to assist with repairing damaged homes, replacing essential household goods, and providing monthly housing assistance for those who lost their primary residences. Specific provisions include up to 6,000 euros for damages to primary residences, 3,000 euros for secondary homes, and monthly relocation assistance of 800 euros for up to twelve months. Additional municipal aid of 200,000 euros per town is being allocated for urgent cleaning and infrastructure recovery. Furthermore, the regional government is providing free phytosanitary treatments to recover over one million trees damaged by the excessive moisture. While weather warnings and movement restrictions have been lifted in most of Valencia, some areas in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands remain under alert.
