On 16 July 2026, the DHL Stormers opened their 2026 Carling Currie Cup campaign at DHL Stadium in Cape Town, hosting defending champions Suzuki Griquas. New head coach Tom Dawson-Squibb highlighted the team's enthusiasm, and fly-half Jean-Luc du Plessis captained the side. Six players – fullback Dylan Miller, wing Mfundo Ndhlovu, No. 8 Wandile Mlaba, lock Tom Barnard, loose-forward Xola Nyali and inside back Dominic Malgas – made their Currie Cup debuts. Two weeks later, on 30 July 2026, the Stormers returned to the same venue for a third-round match against the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV. The fixture formed part of a double-header that also featured the Stormers Bolts U20 Cup debut earlier in the day. At that stage of the competition, the Cheetahs led the log. Ahead of an away fixture against the Airlink Pumas at Mbombela Stadium, the Stormers announced five changes to their starting lineup. The changes included four players in the forward pack: Mhleli Khuzwayo, Herman Lubbe, Wandile Mlaba, and Keke Morabe. In the backline, Joel Leotlela replaced Suleiman Hartzenberg, who was sidelined with rib bruising. Head coach Dawson-Squibb also noted that a late decision would be required regarding fullback Dylan Miller due to a minor injury. On 15 August 2026, the Airlink Pumas defeated the Stormers 29-7 in a bonus-point victory at Mbombela Stadium. While the Stormers controlled much of the territory and scrum play, the Pumas led 15-0 at halftime. Mfundo Ndhlovu scored an early second-half try for the Stormers, but the Pumas responded with two rolling maul tries. The Stormers' injury concerns grew as scrumhalf Stefan Ungerer was forced from the field with an arm injury, leaving the team in sixth place on the log.
