Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and SEGA have provided increasing details regarding their upcoming action-adventure title, ‘Stranger Than Heaven’. Initial information presented at the Tokyo Game Show highlighted a unique paper map system and a combat system designed for increased pace through adjusted enemy health. The game features a protagonist named Makoto Daito and a narrative spanning 50 years across various eras and cities, including Kokura in 1915, Kure in 1929, and Osaka in 1943. Subsequent gameplay trailers expanded on these settings, specifically showcasing the 1929 Kure chapter, which features naval elements and winter environments. The footage also detailed side activities such as visiting bathhouses and gambling dens, as well as the 1943 Minami, Osaka setting. The game is scheduled for release on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. New footage released in October 2026 further clarified that Makoto Daito is a man of mixed American and Japanese heritage. The 1929 Kure segment is set approximately 15 years after the Kokura chapter and includes Western-style fashion and the traditional spinning top game, Beigoma. At PAX Aus 2026, hands-on demonstrations revealed specific combat mechanics, including a two-handed system where players use shoulder buttons to execute light and heavy attacks with both hands. The gameplay emphasizes dodging, parrying, and blocking, allowing players to switch melee weapons mid-combat and perform finishing moves on stunned opponents. Demonstrations included three stages of increasing difficulty, culminating in a one-on-one battle against a samurai-style opponent.
