Street Fighter film production and sequel development trilogy reports
Director Kitao Sakurai confirmed he is writing a potential sequel to the upcoming Street Fighter film, though he noted noting that the project’s realization depends on audience reception and commercial performance. The initial film is expected to feature features animated sequences exploring the backstories of characters Ryu and Ken, specifically involving Gouken and Akuma. Following the film’s its release, it achieved the film earned a $51.1 million opening weekend at the global box office, showing a divide between a 41% critic rating and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Actress Rayna Vallandingham, who portrays the character Juli, stated her intention was to use the role to break Hollywood stereotypes regarding the portrayal of Indian women by playing a “strong, lethal character.” Recent reports suggest the production may be intended as a franchise foundation. Actor Olivier Richters, who portrays Zangief, claimed in a YouTube comment that cast members have reportedly signed contracts for a trilogy. While sequels have not been officially greenlit, Richters indicated the actors are committed to three installments. Addressing fan feedback regarding Zangief’s limited screen time, Richters stated, “If a sequel is made, Zangief will shine,” suggesting the character would have a larger presence in future films. The film’s post-credits scene and abrupt ending have also led to speculation that the studio, Legendary, intended the production to serve as the start of a series.
