Stripe stablecoin and crypto infrastructure expansion

Overview

Stripe is transitioning its cryptocurrency strategy toward core financial infrastructure by integrating stablecoins into its global payment stack. To lead these efforts, the company appointed Henri Stern, co-founder of Privy, to oversee crypto and stablecoin initiatives. Stripe is leveraging technology from its acquisitions of Privy and Bridge to create a settlement layer intended to connect legacy fiat systems with digital asset settlement.

Building on this infrastructure, Stripe has partnered with Plasma to develop multi-currency payment cards. These cards are designed to facilitate stablecoin transactions, such as USDC and OUSD, while supporting various currencies including the US dollar, euro, Brazilian real, Mexican peso, Colombian peso, and Peruvian sol. The initiative aims to simplify international payments and reduce foreign exchange costs. Stripe has set a goal to expand its stablecoin-linked card programs to more than 100 countries by 2027.
