Student group unrest in Kolkata universities

Overview

Political tensions and violence between student organizations have escalated across educational institutions in Kolkata. The unrest began at Jadavpur University following a confrontation on August 20 between the Akhil Bharyaitya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF). During this incident, an armed mob reportedly used sticks and rods to vandalize campus property, including setting fire to student organization flags and placards, and surrounding the university’s administrative building.

Conflict has since spread to other institutions, including the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI). At SRFTI, members of the Bangiyo Hindu Jagaran Manch marched on campus and broke police barricades following a violent confrontation on September 27 that injured at least six students. Tensions at Jadavpur University have continued to persist around the legality of student-led conventions, with university administration noting that some programs were organized without formal permission.
