The salmonellosis outbreak at Masarykova elementary school in Prague’s Újezd nad Lesy district has escalated, prompting a criminal investigation by Prague police. While initial reports identified Salmonella in four children, the number of confirmed cases has risen to 22 children, with approximately 250 students and staff members experiencing digestive issues. Around 40 individuals required hospitalization, including several patients admitted to intensive care units. The Prague Hygiene Station (HSHMP) confirmed that the school cafeteria used eggs that were past their minimum shelf life in the carbonara-style spaghetti served on Monday. Following a complete disinfection of the school premises, officials expect in-person teaching to resume on Tuesday, September 29. To prevent future incidents, the school director announced that an external supplier will provide meals for the main building and kindergartens starting that day. Recent developments indicate the scope of the outbreak may be broader, with approximately 363 individuals affected, including children in the main building, kindergarten students, and seniors receiving meal deliveries. Police are investigating the potential endangerment of health through the use of defective food due to negligence, an offense that could carry a prison sentence of up to two years. Amid the crisis, school director Libor Skala is reportedly considering resignation while the facility undergoes disinfection and staff testing. As of September 29, the total number of affected individuals has risen to 391. Approximately 50 people have required hospitalization due to symptoms including fever, cramps, and bloody stools. Investigations suggest the infection may have resulted from using expired eggs or other technological errors occurring during a period of staff transition in the kitchen. By September 30, the number of laboratory-confirmed cases reached 58, with 25 patients hospitalized in Prague.
