Student safety and health incidents in Vietnam

Reports from Vietnam have detailed several tragic incidents involving students. In Khanh Hoa province, police are investigating an assault where an 11th-grade student student, P.T.P., was knocked off a motorbike and struck by a group, resulting in a fractured arm and potential head injuries. In Vinh Long province, a 15-year-old student died following a drowning accident while fishing and swimming with two other students. Additionally, a patient at E Hospital was declared brain dead after arriving in a deep coma and respiratory arrest following a drowning incident, despite intensive resuscitation efforts including the use of ECMO. Recent reports have expanded to include incidents of violence and health concerns. In Hanoi, authorities are investigating a video from Mac Dinh Chi High School showing a male student slapping a teacher; the teacher is currently recovering at home. In Hai Phong, two educational institutions suspended groups of students following a fatal altercation between students from the Kinh Mon Continuing Education Center and the Maritime and Waterway College 1, which resulted in the death of 16-year-old Hoang Cong Huy. One student has been taken into criminal custody. In Thai Nguyen province, health authorities are investigating why 48 students at Chien Thang Primary and Secondary School experienced symptoms including abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever after a school meal. While Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found in three water samples from school drinking fountains, officials stated there is currently “insufficient scientific evidence” to confirm the bacteria as the direct cause or to conclude it was food poisoning.
