The Sturgeon Moon, named for North American Indigenous Algonquin traditions and the seasonal abundance of fish in the Great Lakes region, was accompanied by a deep partial lunar eclipse on August 27–28, 2026. This event marked the second and final lunar eclipse of the year. During the event, Earth passed between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface. Approximately 93% to 96.2% of the lunar disk was plunged into Earth’s umbra, producing a ‘rusty red’, ‘copper’, or ‘orange’ hue, often referred to as a ‘blood moon’. This phenomenon was one of the deepest partial lunar eclipses observable from Earth until 2028. The eclipse occurred on the night of August 27 and into the early morning of August 28, visible across much of the Americas, Europe, and Africa. In South American countries such as Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, the eclipse served as a major astronomical highlight. In Bulgaria, the National Astronomical Observatory at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences included the event in its official 2026 Astronomical Calendar. In Greece, the phenomenon was visible in the early morning hours as the Moon reached its peak near the western horizon. To celebrate the event, the Greek Ministry of Culture organized special programming for the 27th consecutive year, providing free admission to 126 archaeological sites, museums, and historical monuments.
