The Stuttgart 21 railway infrastructure project has inspired the development of a satirical walking simulator titled ‘S21 – The Game’. Developed by Willi Schorrig and the Stuttgart-based studio Hanging Gardens Interactive, the game parodies the complexities and delays of the multi-billion euro construction project. Players navigate a dimly lit, 350-meter provisional pedestrian tunnel at Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof, attempting to reach a specific platform within a time limit. The game aims to capture the frustration of commuters by evoking a ‘horror-like atmosphere’ through realistic depictions of sparse lighting and eerie loudspeaker announcements, reflecting the project’s shifting completion timelines. Schorrig, who uses the tunnel several times a week, designed the gameplay to serve as a metaphor for the ongoing construction project, where completion dates are repeatedly postponed. The experience is intended to be both entertaining and aggravating, featuring a lack of a traditional ‘happy ending’ to reflect the current reality of the construction site. The demo requires players to navigate the obstacle-filled path to reach platform 9 within 20 minutes.
