Subtropical jellyfish sightings in Germany
Overview
Subtropical by-the-wind jellyfish (Velella velella) have been recorded on the beaches of Sylt, marking the first sighting of this species in Germany. These organisms, which use small sails to drift on the water's surface, were previously observed off the coasts of Scotland and Denmark.
Marine biologist Rainer Borcherding from the Schutzstation Wattenmeer and other experts attribute the arrival of these jellyfish to rising ocean temperatures and climate change. While the Velella velella are considered harmless to humans, their presence serves as a potential indicator of warmer Atlantic waters and may signal the future arrival of more dangerous species in the North Sea.
Although the jellyfish are expected to return to the region, experts note that the North Sea is currently too shallow for the species to complete its reproductive cycle, which requires depths exceeding 1,000 meters.
