Sumatran elephant habitat and conservation crisis

Sumatran elephants are facing critical threats from massive forest fires in Indonesia. Between June and early September, over 4,500 fire hotspots were recorded across 21 elephant habitats, contributing to more than 560,000 hectares of burned land. Experts attribute the fire intensity to the El Niño phenomenon, climate change, and deforestation. These fires have caused habitat loss, fragmentation, and reduced food and water resources, forcing elephants to alter migration patterns while exposing them to toxic smoke.

In response to these environmental pressures and the decline of elephant corridors, conservation efforts are expanding through policy and technology. The Peusangan Elephant Conservation Coordination Forum (FK PECI) is advocating for the protection of corridors in Aceh Province, urging the implementation of Presidential Instruction Number 8 of 2026 to mandate wildlife tunnels and dedicated habitats.

Additionally, at Way Kambas National Park, a joint committee is developing an artificial intelligence-based command center. This system utilizes drone technology and visual and GPS data to map migration routes, identify individual elephants, prevent poaching, and provide early warnings for forest fires and forestry crimes.
