Sumatran wildlife habitat protection efforts
Overview
The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry has initiated enforcement and conservation actions to protect wildlife habitats in Sumatra. Initial operations focused on combating illegal activities, including the detention of suspects for illegal logging in Jambi’s Berbak and Sembilang National Park and the destruction of oil palm trees and huts in Bengkulu’s Teramang Production Forest. During these enforcement actions, officials discovered mines and hazardous chemicals placed along elephant transit routes.
Efforts have since expanded to include technological monitoring and community-based conservation strategies. In the Bukit Tigapuluh Landscape, the government is utilizing GPS collar technology to track elephant movement patterns. Additionally, a community-based restoration program in Tebo Regency has been established to manage food enrichment areas, aiming to mitigate human-wildlife conflict. Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni has advocated for Social Forestry schemes to balance habitat management with the legal and productive needs of local communities.
