Summer food safety and poisoning risks

Health experts and consumer organizations have issued warnings regarding increased food poisoning risks during the summer months. The primary driver is high ambient temperature, which allows bacteria to multiply rapidly in the “danger zone” of 4–60°C.

Initial warnings highlighted specific risks associated with summer travel, such as improper food storage in airports, hotel buffets, and inadequate mini-refrigerators. To mitigate these risks, experts suggested planning ahead and selecting simple, easy-to-store meals.

Subsequent reports from medical specialists, including those from Vithas hospitals, emphasized that improper handling can lead to serious gastrointestinal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations like children and the elderly. While the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) noted that over half of these cases originate from food prepared at home, Salmonella remains a significant seasonal threat. Common transmission vectors include raw or undercooked eggs, poultry, seafood, and contaminated vegetables. Prevention strategies focus on maintaining the cold chain, strict hand hygiene, and preventing cross-contamination between raw and cooked foods.
