Sunny Hostin, co-host of ‘The View’, shared details regarding her past involvement in a high-profile 1991 criminal trial. She revealed that she served as a holdout juror in the murder trial of Daniel Rakowitz, who was known as the ‘Butcher of Tompkins Square Park.’ Hostin stated that she was instrumental in persuading the jury to reach a verdict of ‘not criminally responsible by reason of insanity.’ She described intense deliberations lasting over a week, noting that a fellow juror once threw a chair at her because of her stance. The trial concerned the 1989 death of Monika Beerle, an incident involving allegations of extreme violence and psychosis. However, contemporary reports from the time of the trial appear to contradict Hostin’s account. While Hostin, then known as Asuncion Cummings, cited a 1991 New York Times article regarding a principal holdout juror, news reports and interviews from 1991 suggest a discrepancy. Jurors interviewed by Newsday and the Associated Press at the time identified the holdout as a man who was reportedly motivated by a desire to continue receiving court-provided meals and daily stipends. Further reports from outlets including The New York Post and the Associated Press reinforce this contradiction. Juror Valerie Holmes specifically described the holdout as a ‘manipulative man’ who was determined to reach an insanity verdict for the purpose of prolonging deliberations to secure meals and pay.
