The investigation into the illegal export of Super Micro AI servers equipped with Nvidia chips escalated significantly throughout 2026. Following a May surge in Super Micro shares and a June $7 billion equity-linked financing program intended to meet a $39 billion order backlog, the company faced intense scrutiny. In July, Taiwanese prosecutors intensified their probe, raiding Super Micro’s Taiwan office and affiliates. This led to the detention of several individuals, including a Nvidia employee identified as Chang and two Super Micro workers. Authorities uncovered forged documents used to ship high-end servers through routes including Japan to bypass U.S. export controls. By August 2026, prosecutors in Keelung formally charged nine individuals for an illegal scheme to smuggle 130 high-end AI servers equipped with Nvidia B300 GPUs to mainland China. Investigators determined that 74 servers reached China via routes through Indonesia, Japan, and Hong Kong, while 56 were intercepted by Taiwanese customs. The indictment includes one Nvidia Taiwan employee and two former Super Micro employees. New details emerged in September indicating the involvement of Tiger Technology, which allegedly conspired with the indicted employees and used fake server setups to pass audits. Prosecutors estimate illegal profits from the scheme exceeded 600 million TWD. The case follows U.S. Justice Department charges against three Super Micro affiliates for allegedly smuggling $2.5 billion of AI technology. While Super Micro maintains it is not the target of the probe and is cooperating fully, the ongoing legal actions continue to pressure the company’s market valuation and highlight efforts by Taiwan and the U.S. to curb technology transfers to China.
