Supermassive black hole and galaxy evolution research

Overview

Recent astronomical research has challenged established cosmological models regarding the relationship between supermassive black holes and their host galaxies.

Initial findings using the eROSITA X-ray telescope identified eight systems where the black hole-to-galaxy mass ratio is at least 5 percent. This significantly exceeds the traditional expectation that black holes account for approximately 0.5 percent of a galaxy’s mass, suggesting that black hole growth is not always coupled with galactic development.

Subsequent studies using the XRISM satellite and the VLT/MUSE instrument have further detailed this influence. Researchers found that energy from black hole winds in the quasar H1821+643 is approximately 100 times more powerful than previously calculated, with outflows extending 300,000 light-years. Additionally, observations suggest that active galactic nuclei may contribute to star formation through complex feedback cycles involving energized gas cones and star-forming rings, rather than merely preventing it.
