The Supreme Court of India continues to address legal challenges involving the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), specifically regarding examination procedures and the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020. Regarding the three-language policy, which requires Class 9 students to study three languages including at least two native Indian languages, the Indian government informed the Court that it is developing an implementation roadmap. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati stated the Centre is addressing concerns regarding teacher availability, textbooks, and language choices to align with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. Chief Justice Surya Kant previously noted that while promoting Indian languages is laudable, the policy must be streamlined to avoid placing undue pressure on students or creating impediments due to inadequate infrastructure. In recent proceedings, the Court considered a one-time exemption for current Class 6 students from the three-language formula requirement, which would otherwise mandate a third-language Board examination in Class 10. Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta stated the government will consult officials regarding this potential relief. The Court also addressed the classification of English, following petitioners' requests to treat it as a non-native or foreign language, while the Centre expressed concerns regarding its treatment as an indigenous language. In a separate matter, the Supreme Court declined a plea to reopen the re-evaluation portal for Class 12 examination answer sheets. Students had challenged the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, alleging that digital scanning led to irregularities such as illegible scans or missed pages, and that technical issues prevented timely applications. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta noted that 68 lakh students successfully applied during the notified window. irregularities.
