Surinamese business leaders and financial institutions have expressed a need for more transparent and predictable government policies, specifically regarding permits and regulations, to mitigate risks as the country prepares for opportunities in the emerging oil and gas industry. The Suriname Bankers Association (SBV) announced the inaugural Suriname Banking & Finance Summit to address financial resilience, cybersecurity, and technological innovation. In response to economic needs, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation (EZOTI) has allocated SRD 25 million to the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) Fund. This funding is intended to provide financial support, training, and guidance to entrepreneurs. The ministry is also working on a legislative agenda involving 44 laws to improve the business environment and is upgrading regional offices to enhance service delivery. Building on these efforts, President Jennifer Simons has announced the development of a concrete action plan to improve the business climate. Created in collaboration with the Suriname Business Forum (SBF) and relevant ministries, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between policy intentions and actual implementation. Key objectives include accelerating the licensing process to allow entrepreneurs to begin activities more quickly and improving access to financing. President Simons emphasized that economic growth must translate into societal benefits, such as job creation and improved household incomes, rather than just increased state revenue. As the nation anticipates significant revenue from the oil and gas sectors, the administration intends to use these resources to build a more diversified economy through targeted policy and good governance.
