Suriname’s Heritage Month 2026 featured a series of cultural and educational initiatives aimed at fostering national cohesion. Early activities included a mini-scientific congress and Heritage Fest at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, where President Jennifer Simons and Education Minister Dirk Currie emphasized the role of heritage in national unity. The month concluded with the opening of the Heritage Village at Independence Square in Paramaribo. This three-day festival, spanning locations such as the Palmentuin and Fort Zeelandia, featured music, art, and traditional cuisine. During the opening, President Simons highlighted that true unity requires mutual respect and connection in daily life to ensure a secure society for future generations. Rachel Pinas, chair of the presidential working group, noted the historical significance of the festival's various locations. The inaugural national Heritage Month officially concluded with a closing ceremony at the Mama Sranan and Migrant monuments. Pinas urged citizens to preserve intangible heritage, including stories, proverbs, and wisdom. Parliament Speaker Ashwin Adhin described the initiative as a success for fostering mutual recognition, though observers noted that long-term preservation will require structural policies beyond ceremonial events. Parallel to these celebrations, the Suriname Tourism Authority faced instability following the resignation of its entire Supervisory Board, citing a lack of structural consultation and the failure to release a mandated starting capital of SRD 15 million.
