Suriname’s Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) is implementing strategies to resolve various financial arrears. To address social benefit payment backlogs, Minister Diana Pokie announced plans to transition from cash-based distributions to digital payment methods by 2027. In partnership with the Suriname Post Savings Bank (SPSB), the ministry is developing a nationwide digital application to reduce operational costs and logistical challenges in remote districts. The success of this initiative relies on funding from the Ministry of Finance and Planning. Separately, the ministry is addressing rent arrears for its district offices. To mitigate the impact of unpaid rent—which has led to the closure of several offices and service delays—Sozavo intends to cluster more than 70 district offices into government-owned buildings. This includes renovating state-owned properties to reduce reliance on private rentals. Recent reports indicate that these arrears have already hindered property maintenance and contributed to the closure of specific offices, such as those located in Houttuin and Wijk 10 and 11.
