Suriname police staffing and security reform

Overview

Suriname’s Minister of Justice and Police, Harish Monorath, has initiated efforts to reform the Korps Politie Suriname (KPS) to address critical personnel shortages. The force currently operates with approximately 2,600 officers, falling short of the 3,500 required to meet operational needs. This deficit is compounded by a monthly loss of 24 to 30 officers due to emigration, retirement, and death.

Monorath identified the disproportionate allocation of manpower to VIP security as a primary cause for reduced capacity in crime prevention and public service. He noted that some individuals receive up to 21 officers, a practice he intends to critically assess.

Following these concerns, the Minister announced a phased reduction of police personnel assigned to protect government ministers to mitigate high costs related to overtime and meal allowances. For example, the 17-person security detail for Minister Raymond Landveld was specifically questioned. The stated objective is to reassign these officers to regular police duties to strengthen general public service. Amidst these changes, an inter-ministerial commission has been established to monitor and regulate police overtime to prevent abuse and address administrative errors.
