Swara Bhasker Padmaavat controversy

Overview

The controversy surrounding Swara Bhasker’s remarks on the film ‘Padmaavat’ has escalated into physical protests. Following Bhasker’s critique of the film’s portrayal of jauhar—where she argued that depicting mass self-immolation as an act of honor could send a problematic message to modern women—members of the Hindu organization ‘Yogi Youth Brigade’ staged demonstrations in Agra, Uttar Pradesh.

During these protests, demonstrators burned and trampled posters of the actress, characterizing her comments as an insult to Queen Padmavati and the sacrifice of Rajput women. Kunwar Ajay Tomar, the state president of the Yogi Youth Brigade, reportedly used offensive language and announced a reward of 1.51 lakh rupees for anyone who would ‘cut out the actress’s tongue.’

Bhasker has previously maintained that her remarks were ‘mistranslated and taken out of context to create a false narrative online,’ clarifying via video that she did not label historical figures as cowards but rather questioned the cinematic message conveyed by the depiction. Meanwhile, ‘Padmaavat’ writer Prakash Kapadia has defended the film, stating the sequence was intended to reflect the ‘do or die’ reality of the period based on historical research.
