Sweden 2026 election campaign

Overview

Political campaigning for the 2026 Swedish general election, scheduled for September 13, 2026, has intensified. Parties are deploying political posters nationwide, with the Moderaterna party viewing the practice as a crucial signal of the election season. Observers have emphasized that parties must adhere to local ordinances and road laws regarding the placement and removal of campaign signage to ensure equal application of rules.

Sverigedemokraterna (SD) leader Jimmie Åkesson has been conducting a tour in northern Sweden to attract voters from the Social Democrats. SD has also modified its economic stance on the mining industry, calling for a comprehensive review of the total tax and cost burden on mining companies to maintain national competitiveness. Recently, Åkesson stated that SD will not provide support votes to the Liberal Party, asserting that SD is not a bourgeois party.

SD’s advertising has faced recent controversy. In Stockholm, Jernhusen removed SD campaign posters from the central station because the messaging was deemed “unclear and potentially exclusionary.” Additionally, Västtrafik removed advertisements in Skaraborg following protests and sick leaves from drivers with Somali roots who felt targeted by the campaign’s content.

Concerns regarding foreign interference have also emerged. The Swedish Psychological Defence Agency noted that a pro-Russian troll network known as ‘Matryoshka’ is targeting the election by spreading fabricated news videos on X. These videos falsely accuse Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of corruption and claim widespread election fraud, a campaign likely intended to “overwhelm media fact-checking resources.”

The Social Democrats held a kickoff event in Örnsköldsvik featuring Stefan Löfvén, chairman of the European Social Democratic Party. As the election approaches, early voting for Swedish citizens living abroad began on August 20, with domestic early voting scheduled to start on August 26.
