Saab has unveiled the first GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft for the Swedish Air Force, designated as the S 106. Built on a Bombardier Global 6000 business jet platform, the aircraft utilizes the Erieye Extended Range radar to provide multi-domain surveillance across air, sea, and land. The radar system is designed to detect, identify, and track various targets, including drones and missiles, at ranges reported between 550 and 650 kilometers. This capability allows for the sharing of real-time operational data with fighter jets, warships, and ground units. Sweden has ordered a total of three GlobalEye aircraft to replace its aging Saab 340-based ASC 890 surveillance aircraft, which the country intends to donate to Ukraine. Following a testing and verification phase, deliveries to the Swedish military are expected to begin in 2027. In the third quarter of 2026, Saab reported a significant increase in order intake, which more than tripled compared to the previous year to reach SEK 65.8 billion ($6.6 billion). This surge was driven in part by a SEK 10.1 billion ($1 billion) order for two GlobalEye AEW&C aircraft. This growth also coincided with a SEK 24.6 billion ($2.5 billion) contract for 16 Gripen E fighter jets for Ukraine, supported by a European loan with British assistance. The technology also holds continues to hold broader implications for NATO, as eleven member countries have discussed a joint project to acquire up to ten GlobalEye aircraft to modernize alliance surveillance capabilities.
