Researchers from Karolinska Institutet and Umeå University in Sweden have published findings in JAMA Network Open regarding the efficacy of colorectal cancer screening programs. Analyzing up to 14 years of data from the Stockholm–Gotland program, which followed approximately 376,000 individuals, the study indicates that active participation in at-home stool sample screening can reduce the risk of death from colorectal cancer by as much as 43 percent. The program targets individuals aged 60 to 74, providing kits every 24 months to detect invisible blood in stool samples. While receiving an invitation was associated with a 26 percent reduction in mortality, the most significant benefits were observed among those who actively completed the testing process. Researchers identified a behavioral challenge to the program’s effectiveness, noting that approximately one-third of invited individuals did not return their samples despite the tests being provided free of charge. This suggests that low participation rates may prevent a significant portion of the potential life-saving benefits from being realized.
