In late July 2026, an opinion poll in the municipality of Ronneby showed that the governing coalition of the Social Democrats, Moderates and Sweden Democrats could retain a majority despite widespread voter dissatisfaction. At the same time, an analyst’s assessment of the national government highlighted strong scores for defence, NATO membership and support for Ukraine, moderate results on crime reduction, and lower scores for energy, building and housing policies.

A week later, attention shifted to the national arena. The existing governing alliance of Moderates, Christian Democrats and Liberals announced it would not contest the September 2026 parliamentary election. Instead, a new “Tidö” configuration promising ministerial posts to the Sweden Democrats was being positioned. Recent polls indicated that even with the Liberals’ modest support, the Tidö coalition remained well short of the 50 % threshold, suggesting a historic swing would be required for it to form a government. Commentators noted economic improvements over the past four years but also persistent challenges such as high energy prices, inflation and record gun‑related violence.
